We’re Moved! (And Burst.net can bite me!)

Update Wednesday, April 23rd at 8:30 AM: I’ve been working on the new site set-up. Although things are running pretty well, a few more tweaks should get it running better. I’m also prepping stuff for an upgrade of the site’s underlying CMS. At the same time I’ve been working on the new member group that I set up for contributors. At this point I need to start manually linking member accounts with Paypal. When that’s done I will also need to work on automating that process, although that will have to wait until the CMS is updated and the site is running to my satisfaction. Thanks again for your patience.

Update Thursday, April 17th at 11:00 AM: I’ve been bogged down looking for a fix to a domain redirect issue caused by a new php handler that I’m using on the server. For now using some of the old domain names will produce an error if you try to go to a sub-directory (like www.baseballprimer.com/newsstand/). I’ve decided to put off fixing this until later so I can get to some other things on my to-do list. At the moment I’m working on removing ads for people who’ve donated. With the way I have ads called in the old templates, it’s proving to be be a little time consuming. When I get this task done I’ll start moving people into the new member group I’ve set up to trigger the change. This will be time consuming as well as I will need to manually associate the donations with the accounts. Eventually I will automate the process but, for now, I’d appreciate your patience if it takes a few days to get rid of the ads on your account.

Update Tuesday, April 15th at 7:30 PM: Got a bunch of things done today. Except when I hosed the web server for a few minutes, things have gone pretty well. I’m still not happy with the way things are running but my mind is fried so it will have to wait until tomorrow. Thanks again for the donations. It’s very much appreciated. Assuming I get things running a little better tomorrow, I will start setting things up for those of you who donated. Hopefully, you can start viewing the site without ads by the weekend.

Update Tuesday, April 15th at 1 PM: Things seems seem to be running OK after a few tweaks. There is still work to be done squishing a few bugs (redirects are wonky once in a while). The site also needs some more performance tweaking. Those things will have to wait until a little later, however, because I need to get a little sleep before I make a really stupid mistake.

Update Tuesday, April 15th at 7:30 AM: The site is moved over to its new host. I have a lot of work to do getting the servers optimized. Please bear with me.

Update Monday, April 14th at 3:50 PM: I will be taking the old server off-line tonight between 3-4 AM to finish moving things over to the new server. There should be only a few hours of downtime but it might take longer for certain DNS server.

Update Sunday, April 13 at 7:30 PM: New server set up. DNS redundancy added. Extra domains moved over.Tweaking and testing tomorrow. One day ahead of schedule. Beverage time and GOT time.

I am moving the site to a new server host this week. On March 28th my server host, burst.net, disconnected my servers from their data center in Scranton PA, put them on truck, and took them to another data center in North Carolina. I was not given any notification prior to the move even though the move was planned in advance. During the downtime they did not reply to any tickets and, instead, provided an automated response that they were migrating servers. At the same time, they have been trying to charge my account for next month’s bill weeks before the due date. (Luckily I only transfer money into this account when I am ready to make a payment.) This simply is not acceptable, so I am moving the site.

I have taken a week’s vacation from my regular job to get this done. The tentative plan is to switch the site over on Tuesday night on April 15th or Wednesday night on April 16th, depending on my progress. Although I’m working to minimize the downtime and prevent avoidable problems, there may be times the site will be down. I will post updates on this thread, on Facebook, and on Twitter.

I apologize for the downtime and the inconvenience.

Way to go, Jim. Burstnet = crooks. Best of luck with the new site. Let me know, or any of the computer pros here, if you have any technical questions.

Good for you, Jim. I'll be sure to make a donation this month to show my gratitude.

   3. BDC Posted: April 13, 2014 at 01:59 PM (#4685431)
Yes, good point, #2. I just sent in my first donation in a while. Jim, there are few people who would take a weekend off from work just to provide me a venue for snarking about Ranger relief pitchers, and I appreciate it very much :)

I am also willing to take some time off work to help out, if you're willing. Just let me know.

Good decision, I'll throw in some money when I get paid next week.

As always, thanks for everything you do for this site!

Not to be obtuse. But where is the link to donate? I'm not seeing it....
   7. BDC Posted: April 13, 2014 at 02:21 PM (#4685445)
Jimmuscomp, go to Stuff on the red bar below the logo, then scroll all the way down to Support Us, and then click and scroll down again.

There may be a more obvious way, but that will work.

Good reminder, BDC. I haven't donated before, but this happens to be a flush week, so I just dropped some coins into the virtual bucket.
   9. deputydrew Posted: April 13, 2014 at 03:25 PM (#4685489)
I just donated. I've received a ton of enjoyment from this site and have never given anything back. It's long overdue.

I'd encourage everyone to donate and to do so in a dollar amount that has some baseball significance. Then come here and tell us why you chose that particular amount.

I donated $19.93. As a Giants fan, the 1993 season will always be a bitter-sweet memory. It was the first season with Barry Bonds, the last with Will Clark and may have been the last great pennant race in baseball history. I also considered $19.89 (as 1989 was Will Clark's greatest season) and $22.22 (as Will wore #22).

Thanks BDC - it used to be easier to find!
   11. JimMusComp misses old primer... Posted: April 13, 2014 at 03:41 PM (#4685502)
I just dropped 39.81 on BBTF. 20.02 for the Angels WS title and 19.79 for the first division title.

Good idea deputydrew on HOW to choose amounts.....

Good luck Dan - hoping for a smooth transition....
   12. jimfurtado Posted: April 13, 2014 at 04:23 PM (#4685532)
Thanks for the donations. To show my thanks, everyone who donates will be able to view the site without ads for the next year or so once I know the site is running fine on the new setup. I've taken the full week off to work on things so I hope everything is running nicely by the end of the week.
   13. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: April 13, 2014 at 04:31 PM (#4685542)

HA!

That ad causes some consternation in my home as well, Harveys.....
   15. puck Posted: April 13, 2014 at 05:46 PM (#4685577)
So, was any of that equipment Jim's? That would suck to have to drive down to NC to fetch it. But maybe that's why he has to take time off.
   16. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: April 13, 2014 at 06:02 PM (#4685581)
Wait, Jim has a regular job, too?

Anyway, I would have gladly donated more recently if I knew it would stop the ads. When the ads became more and more prominent I just figured that Jim was (rightfully) making some money off this whole thing.

Jim, you really should make an obvious "donate" button somewhere on the main page or the newsblog. I've donated before, and wanted to again, but had trouble figuring out how.
   19. Bote Man Posted: April 13, 2014 at 06:33 PM (#4685606)
Agreed on making the link to donate cashmoney prominent on the home screen.

Also, after the dust settles perhaps Jim could set up a sandbox copy of the site where we could try out some tweaks to the design, unless he's perfectly happy with the way things are now.
   20. Where have you gone Brady Anderson? Posted: April 13, 2014 at 08:00 PM (#4685647)
Jim, thanks for all your hard work, this site is clearly the best thing on the internet. I also wanted to thank all of the commentors. I've very much enjoyed reading all of your output, whether about baseball or whatever else comes up, and the site wouldn't be the same without you. I made a modest donation, but I don't really mind the ads (although I would not mind if the various permutations of half-naked women disappear), so please leave them on my account, because you deserve as much money as you can get.
   21. jimfurtado Posted: April 13, 2014 at 08:06 PM (#4685653)
Wow, you guys were very generous today. I appreciate it very much. This has been a labor of love for me but I won't deny getting a little extra cash isn't very much appreciated. My wife has been very understanding while I've been working on the site the last couple of days. I will be sure to use a few of the dollars sent along to take her out to dinner. I will tell her to thank all of you.

boteman, that's a good idea. I've got a redesign about 90% done but have had trouble finding time to finish it off. There is a lot of stuff in the old design that just doesn't work any more. Making it easier for people to submit links really needs to be completed. With a little luck, I hope to be able to get to some of the stuff on my giant to-do list this week.

The servers at burst.net are leased. The lease will expire this week.
   22. Bote Man Posted: April 13, 2014 at 08:55 PM (#4685670)
Jim, I've been helping the FreeSWITCH project and also the guys writing the SDR# radio package with their wikis. If you need help vetting the new design I'm volunteering what little services I could provide; at the very least I could be another pair of eyes for a sanity check of new things.

As always, if any member of your BTF staff is caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.

Good luck, Jim.

OK, I guess that's Barry Bonds' HR total divided by 10 if you want to be pedantic.

Long time reader, first time donor. Was going to give $19.18 $20.04 $20.07 $20.13, but saw that for just a little bit more could be a "Supporter" of BTF instead of a "Booster," so I made it an even $25. Thanks, Jim!

Just donated... though I forgot to log in before I donated.. so don't know if it will connect to my account here... oops. anyway I donated $26.40 in honor of Barry Zitto's OPS while batting for San Francisco the last 7 years (would have included batting in Oakland, but that pushed it below 0.250). I've always loved Barry's batting line as his AVG and SLG are identical (.108/.156/.108 for SF). In 386 PA's he never got any hit but a single, and his batting line was nearly identical every year for his first 4 years in SF. Also, for such a bad hitter, he walked a lot.

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

Not really comfortable disabling cookies. I'm not that tecnology savvy that I'm sure what I can and cannot do with settings for my work computer. I can access with IE now however. The problem is just FireFox.

It's not baseball related, but I donated an amount that appears in the title of the #1 song the day I was born and that rhymes with "if man is still alive".

I'm having the same problem as Jose (the bad redirect error) in Firefox. This is the only thread that will load, and when I try to post I get the error again.

Clearing all the BTF cookies makes no difference.

Works in Chrome.

I suggest if you're getting the "redirect" error, try:

1) Forced full refresh. It always seems to change on me; it's either Ctrl-F5 or Shift-F5 or something-F5, but I'm pretty sure F5 is involved in some way. I know F1 is almost always Help, so there's that.

2) It could be that the changes to the DNS entries simply have not propagated to your ISP yet. AFAIK there aint nuttin' you can do but wait for the old entries to time out and get refreshed with the new i.p. numbers. This happens under the hood, you can't influence it. I noticed I was getting the site fine on my desktop machine on my Comcast connection, but on my AT&T smart phone this morning I still got the "site down" error page. AT&T just hadn't gotten the updated phone book listing.

3) If you think you've waited long enough, you could poke around in Firefox's awful cookie management window, locate the cookies for bbtf.org and baseballthinkfactory.org and just delete them outright. Then the site will think you've never visited it before and maybe that will fix it. Or it could start World War III.

I cleared basically everything but form entries from my history, and restarted my computer, and the site started working. I still get a bunch of code at the end of the URL that forces an error when I first log in, but then I delete the extra text and I'm fine.

Which URL are you using to get to the site? I changed the php handler and I'm working through some redirect issues.

Congratulations on a really smooth transition, Jim.

If this is the case, or any time you are having issues with your DNS servers, you can change your network settings to use OpenDNS or Google's DNS servers. How to change that depends on your OS obviously, but it is easy to do.

It's actually worse for me this morning. Yesterday I could get to http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org and http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/newsstand fine, it just wouldn't load any threads besides this one. Now it won't even load those three pages. www.bbtf.org does not work either. I do use noscript, but even with that turned off it still doesn't work (and I don't think there were ever any scripts on bbtf).

It's not a DNS issue since it works fine in chrome, I think.

Are there cookies for this site that aren't labeled baseballthinkfactory?
   85. jimfurtado Posted: April 16, 2014 at 10:45 AM (#4686850)
I'm going to test things in Firefox. You man want to clear all the cookies for bbtf.org as well as baseballthinkfactory.org and then coming back to the site using the full domain, not bbtf.org.

For the Apache buffs, I'm having an issue with the way redirects are being handled in Apache while using mod_fcgid to handle PHP. Does anyone have a workaround for the apparent mod_fcgid/mod_redirect problem?

Jim, it seems to be working in Firefox for me now. Thanks.

If you're seeing the site but no threads you might be looking at the new version which presents things differently.

$26.32 for Cal Ripken's Games Played Ironman Streak.

Edit:
(I didn't notice that David Nieporent beat me to it. Oh well, still a good number.)

I'm too tired and lazy to think of a good bb related number so I just dumped a wad of cash in the cup. Now please stop playing that saxophone.

Jim, you are one of the great heroes of modern times. This site is essential to a civilized life.

But you guys complaining about the half-naked women are just....confused.

Maybe the complaint is they're only half naked.

Jim:

I’ve been occasionally getting the site hijacked by a virus scam trying to get me to “update my Java” (and download an exe file). I find this very concerning.

I go to a new page, and suddenly the page is hijacked and a box descends from the top of the page, saying "your Java needs to be updated, click here" and the box (if you were to click on it) tries to download an .exe file. It's happened 5-6 times in the last couple of days.

I've tried to deal with it for now by installing AdBlock and blacklisting BBTF, but I prefer not to do this.
   97. jimfurtado Posted: April 17, 2014 at 10:57 AM (#4687681)
JLAC, I'd be shocked if this is originating from the site. I only have two ad agencies supplying ads on the site. They are both well-established and have mechanisms in place to prevent people from uploading such ads. Can you send me some screenshots when this happens?
   98. Bote Man Posted: April 17, 2014 at 11:06 AM (#4687692)
Is a good bet that all that stuff is occurring in an iframe that intercepts legit requests. It likely has nothing to do with this site. If you're running Firefox I strongly suggest the NoScript plugin to stop anything from running until you allow it.

Ron Cey (11) + Keith Moreland (6) + Gary Matthews (36), my 3 favorite Cubs from the 1984 team.... and thanks, Jim, for providing the online chronicle from young and foolish Cub fandom to old and foolish Cub fandom... The world must know!

I don't know if it means anything, but bbtf.org now redirects me to http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/$1 which is definitely a mod_rewrite rule gone screwy.
