Staying Logged In Issue

UPDATE: June 6, 2012—Expression Engine has provided an update which they claim takes care of the issue for most people. Since I’ve seen reports of new bugs introduced in the updateI am waiting a week before testing. I expect it will be about two weeks before I will be able to install their update. Sorry for any inconvenience this delay may cause but it is important that test their update on my test environment first.

This is a new thread dedicated to the “staying logged in” issue that has reappeared after I updated our backend to Expression Engine 2.4. The issue has been discussed in a few places but it would be more useful for me to consolidate the conversation to one place. Additionally, it provides a more prominent placement for the discussion.

This issue cropped up initially with our upgrade from Expression Engine (the Content Management System the site is built on) 1.6.8 to 2.3.1. At that point I was able to patch their code to fix things. Recently I upgraded our site to EE version 2.4 in order to take advantage of some features present in the new caching system I am using with the redesign. Since the update to 2.4, many users have been reporting problems staying logged in across devices. A few patches have improved things for a few users. Unfortunately, some users are still experiencing the problem. Thanks to an observation by Boteman, I believe I have found the cause of one of the problems with their new code. A few minutes ago I made another change to their code.

If you are experiencing the problem, I suggest you log off all your devices, clear all their site cookies, and log in again. Please report here whether the issue has been resolved.

Sorry for any inconvenience. Thanks to all the members who have provided feedback.

Jim

It's not as if BTF the only website that forces you to login if you stay away for more than a couple of hours,

I think it's the only one I frequent where this is the case, which might simply mean that I don't frequent many sites (which is indeed true).

I have IE9 and chrome

it doesn't matter which one i use - this site will log me off whether or not i close the browser. the amount of time i stay logged in varies between 15 minutes and 5-6 hours. it also doesn't seem to matter whether or not i open any other tabs.

I've never been to another site (which is not https) that requires login, that logs you off without you closing the browser.

Weirdly I've had this browser up now for...at least a week, maybe two. And so far I haven't been logged out. I'll try closing it out later and see if that logs me out. (This is the latest Chrome, FWIW.)

BBC, there's at least one forum I frequent that logs me out after a couple of days, even if I leave the browser open.

Which shows that you've got more sense than I do. But the TCM forums log you out if you don't keep your window open and add new comments with great frequency. You can get logged out within half an hour or less if you close a window or don't actively comment during that amount of time.

Seems to be fixed for me. FF13 on OS X and Windows 7.

For a few days, I thought the problem had actually been solved; it seemed as if I hadn't had to login in several days. Then yesterday and today it was back with a vengeance, logging me out every few minutes. A couple of times I went to a page, read three or four posts and added a comment right away, and it told me I didn't have permission to post because it had already logged me out.

Of course you realize that this is but the first step in Brainwashing 101. You're lucky that the time zone difference between New Jersey and Command Central sometimes garbles the instructions.

I will be updating EE's code either early Thursday or Friday morning (4AM). They have made some changes to the code which they claim will alleviate most of the logged in issues. I am still skeptical as other sites report the same problem. In any case, we will find out in a few days.

Again, thanks for your patience.

My situation isn't that pronounced, but I was logged out overnight.

Okay, now I'm getting logged out every few minutes, too.

I too was being logged out every few minutes tonight but that was on my iPhone if that matters.

Same here.

I probably shouldn't put the kibosh on this by mentioning it, but as of this moment I haven't had to log in since sometime on Wednesday. The only difference I noticed the last time I logged in was that the two boxes below the password line were already checked in for the first time since before this issue arose.

Since Andy already jinxed it, I also stayed logged in overnight. Which would be awesome if I only went through a week of what seems to have been a months-long bug.
   115. Bote Man Posted: June 23, 2012 at 08:08 AM (#4164225)
#113 - Andy, I think your browser is remembering those check boxes for you. For security reasons I didn't use the browser's facility to remember login credentials, but this drove me to enable that feature so now I have my username, password, and those checkboxes remembered for me.

The fact that we have to keep going through that login process, whether or not the browser remembers stuff, is the root problem that Jim is suffering through solving. I've got this filed under "annoyance", but it's not a deal-breaker for me, so y'all are stuck with me for a while longer.

Could be, but it wasn't doing it before, and I updated my version of Firefox over a month ago and haven't altered any of my settings since then.

I continue to get logged off every couple hours. Has never improved for me at all since the problem began.

As many have said, it's not a huge problem, but it is a little annoying.

Edit is now broken for me. Anyone else?

Let me give it a try ...
   120. Mr. Hotfoot Jackson (gef, talking mongoose) Posted: June 25, 2012 at 12:08 PM (#4165655)
Yep. My edits won't save.
   121. Mr. Hotfoot Jackson (gef, talking mongoose) Posted: June 25, 2012 at 12:09 PM (#4165657)
And also, the lack of automatic lag-on crap remains in effect.

It isn't just edits. Yesterday I couldn't even compose a comment. The screen kept freezing up so that no text appeared. I eventually wrote it on Word and copied it here.

I just cold-booted my home desktop 'puter, started Firefox 13.0.1 (THIS week's latest offering), clicked on BaseballStinkFactory in my bookmarks, and here I am without having to log in. It wasn't like this the other day.
   125. jimfurtado Posted: June 26, 2012 at 03:16 PM (#4166917)
I applied an EE update early Sunday morning. Hopefully, their updated code is an improvement. Please let me know if this remains the case.
   126. Javy Joan Baez (chris h.) Posted: June 26, 2012 at 03:31 PM (#4166942)
I'm definitely not having to log in anymore. Very nice.

EDIT: and edits seem to work.
   127. Greg Pope Posted: June 26, 2012 at 03:44 PM (#4166966)
I still have the login issue. Although I've given up on trying to see what happens if I don't switch between home computer, work computer, iPad, iPhone, etc. And I don't clear cookies regularly, either. Jim, if you think this really might be fixed, I would be willing to go through the whole process.
   128. Bote Man Posted: June 27, 2012 at 11:27 AM (#4167632)
And editing posts works again, too! WOO HOO!
   129. Greg Pope Posted: June 27, 2012 at 12:40 PM (#4167706)
I did not have to log in today, but I have not tried to do anything on any other computers since I last logged in (and posted #127).
   130. Greg Pope Posted: July 03, 2012 at 02:13 PM (#4172303)
Not sure if anyone's still checking, but I have had no login problems for a week now, logging in on multiple computers and devices.
   131. Mefisto Posted: July 03, 2012 at 03:22 PM (#4172427)
I've been logged in since Sunday. Seems to have worked. Yay Jim!

Well, now my stay logged in problem seems to finally be fixed in September?!
   134. Bote Man Posted: September 16, 2012 at 06:20 AM (#4237088)
This has been happening to me again the past few weeks.

Me too neither. I had attributed it to upgrading Firefox about a dozen times a week, so no control in that experiment. Maybe the latest change to E.E. fixed some and broke others?
