Sorry about the Downtime Today

Sorry about the downtime. I had some long overdue server updates to take care of today. The one you’ll notice is the site is now running in secure/https mode, so you’ll stop getting error messages when you visit the site using Google Chrome.

Let me know if you notice anything wonky.

I can't complain about you fixing the site. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks, Jim.

Man, I've been putting off going to https with my rinky-dink personal web site. It's just a bunch of plain HTML pages so I never saw the need, but now we're being forced into it whether we like it or not. I guess I'll have to fork over for a certificate; I really don't want to hassle with (forgetting) to renew a Let's Encrypt cert, free or not.

No sweat Jim, thanks for everything.

If you can set up certbot on your server then you can easily set it to renew a Let's Encrypt certification automatically. If you're on shared hosting it's likely that certbot is already built in. I fired up certbot up maybe two years ago and haven't thought about it since.

And, thanks Jim!

Thanks, Jim.

I pointed out to my wife that the 2-4 hour downtime was over 6 hours and how I had been in that situation more than a few times. She pointed out that the year of the message was 2014. ;) Been there and done that too!

Another reason this site rocks! Thanks!

I appreciate that you make an effort to keep the site updated. You don't just coast on your Laurels. Thanks.

As for "wonky", here's mine, which has been going on for over 5 years now. Frequently, especially late at night, I find that, while I can login just fine, and can open and read everything just fine, and can comment on Newsstand posts just fine, I cannot comment on any Blogpen posts; the comment box at the bottom does not appear. Everything else is fine, but not the Blogpen. Since I'm involved in the Most Meritorious Player project, which involves multiple Blogpen posts a month, this is a giant pain. And worse, even when I can comment on a Blogpen post, I have to go through a ritual to get there. I have to login, and then open a Newsstand post. If it shows the comment box at the bottom, then I can just click out of it and click on the Blogpen post I want to comment on. If I can't even comment on a Newsstand post, I'm doomed. Sometimes the ritual works. It NEVER works if I don't go through the ritual.

As I said, this has been going on for years. I have no idea why. My best guess is that you do backup late at night, and something about the Blogpen doesn't work when you'e backing up. But that's really just a guess.

Could you look into that one for me? I will make attempts to see if the new update fixed the problem. But after so many years, I have my doubts. There must be something very limited going on, as it only affects the Blogpen.

Thanks again, - Brock Hanke
