BBTF Mobile Beta Testers Needed

Due to requests, I’ve started work on a mobile version of the site. Although it’s probably a few weeks off, I’d like to ask for beta testers. If you are interested, please post a comment with the name of your mobile device, your browser name and the version number.

I've used my blackberry's standard browser to check this site before, and the formatting is kinda annoying. I'd love to try a true mobile version, thanks for the hard work Jim!

I have an iPhone, as well. Cheng/Vlad/Barrett, are you sure the version of Safari you're running is 3.0? I'm fairly positive the 3.0.1 update touched Safari whilst fixing the SMS exploit. My phone is in the other room and I am lazy.

If you need someone for iPhone, like you're short your goal, let me know. All things equal, I avoid volunteering for testing because work jumps out of nowhere. And with the kids back in the dorms in two weeks, it would be tested under fire.

Opera Mini 4.2 browser, basic little Sprint cell phone (Sanyo manuf.)

The regular BBTF actually looks pretty good in the mobile view of this browser - it just narrows everything to one nice thin column.

BB-Ref is the site that needs a good mobile layout for me...

Yeah, my phone isn't actually on 3.0.1 and is instead still on 3.0 for exactly this reason, which I failed to mention above. So Jim, if you want jailbroken phones tested as well (though there should be no difference, of course), I arrrr here.

As mentioned above, bbtf actually looks pretty great on this device already, but I'd be happy for a text-only simplified site.

Oh, and while I'm happy to help beta test, if/when its actually released I hope there's a link to permanently disable the mobile site. I kind of hate the limited functionality of mobile sites, and BBTF seems to lack a lot of the dead weight bells & whistles that a mobile version might strip out from other websites.

Haven't synced for a while (moving to a new house, comp is packed up), so I'm still on 3.0.

Apropos of very little, as stated before I avoid hand-held electronics crap (other than the remotes for my DVD & VHS players & TV) like the plague, cell phones very much included*, but in clicking this on I happened to see the Facebook notice in the Hot Topics rail. Done.

*I presume my life is much more stress-free than the rest of yours.**

I have an iPhone 3G, with the latest Safari version.

The site displays pretty well, but it could be improved a bit. Rather than using a column for Hot Topics, perhaps a tab, so that you toggle between the main content and the Hot Topics (rather than having to scroll and re-size/scale when switching between the two).

In the forums, the large amount of whitespace between posts is a much bigger problem on mobile displays; usernames in their own column is also a poor use of page space. It would also be nice to have a link/button to hide/show ziggurats, to reduce the amount of scrolling.

iPhone 3.0 - looks like you've got plenty of iPhone users, but would be happy to help test/participate in a beta... That way, when people ask me what I'm doing on BTF during the workday, instead of sheepishly saying I'm just killing some time while something complies -- I can give them an annoyed look and say 'Beta testing! Now will you let me get back to work?'

I have an LG 840 with Teleca Browser Q7.0-1.6. The current sites formatting works great in the browser, but I would be glad to test a mobile version. I am actually reading this on the phone now.

I also have a Nokia N800 I can test with.
